The Origin and Cosmological Significance of Deepavali -
The word Deepavali translates from Sanskrit as Dīpa (lamp/light) and Āvali (row or continuous series). While popularly celebrated across varied cultural traditions, Vedic and Puranic literature attribute the festival to several defining cosmic occurrences.
Story 1. Samudra Manthan and the Emergence of Mahalakshmi: According to the Vishnu Purana and Shrimad Bhagavatam, Goddess Mahalakshmi manifested from the cosmic churning of Ksheera Sagara (the Ocean of Milk) on Kartik Amavasya. The universe was immediately illuminated with beauty, abundance, and nourishment. Choosing Lord Narayana as Her eternal consort, Her manifestation marks the renewal of universal vitality.
Story 2.yodhya’s Welcome of Shri Ram: In the Ramayana, upon completing fourteen years of exile, slaying Ravana, and establishing Dharma, Bhagwan Shri Ram, Mata Sita, and Lakshmana returned to Ayodhya on this moonless night. The citizens illuminated the entire kingdom with earthen ghee lamps to dispel the darkness of the Amavasya night, symbolizing the return of righteous order.
Story 3. The Transcendence of Alakshmi: The Bhavishyottara Purana documents that on Kartik Amavasya, households perform cleansing rites and light lamps to dispel Alakshmi (poverty, stagnation, inertia) and invite Sthira Lakshmi (enduring spiritual and material fortune).
